In approximately 2040, James Halliday dies, marking a turning point in the history of the OASIS and the wider world that depends on it. At the time of his death, Halliday is one of the most influential figures on the planet. As co founder of Gregarious Simulation Systems and principal architect of the OASIS, his work has already reshaped global society. Millions rely on the platform for education, employment, communication, and daily life. His death therefore carries both personal and systemic consequences, immediately raising questions about the future of the virtual environment he created.
Shortly after his death is confirmed, Halliday releases a pre recorded message that is broadcast across the OASIS. In this message, delivered in the persona of his avatar Anorak, he announces the existence of a hidden Easter Egg somewhere within the simulation. He explains that the Egg can only be reached by solving a series of puzzles and challenges based on his lifelong interests, particularly the games, films, and music of the late twentieth century. The reward for completing this process is total control of the OASIS and ownership of Halliday’s immense fortune. This announcement transforms the platform instantly, shifting it from a shared environment into the setting for a global competition.
