And we're live!

Spring 2026

What started as a little 'this will be fun to make' 1-page countdown, escalated into something much bigger as I disappeared down the rabbit hole and then, after some time... VOILA! Here is Sci Fi Countdown! A little timer that ticks away to future (Or past) events in sci-fi, as if they're grounded in reality, just because... for fun.

If you're here then you're probably a sci fi geek like me and a fan of at least one of the franchises I have listed. So, welcome! If you see any errors then please contact me via the contact page. I'm always open to suggestions for new stories/franchises/worlds to add, and if you can back up any amendments with evidence to new dates then I'm happy to see those too.

Currently, I only have the countdown itself and some key event pages listed for each franchise, but maybe in the near future (No pun intended) I'll add some other little fun things, but for now, this can be seen as a database of future (And past) fictional events, treated as if they are real.

While researching the franchises and events, a few things struck me. Most notably that at the time of writing (Spring 2026), a number of these 'future events' have now passed. Do we have real hoverboards and androids walking our streets? Well... no, but we do have plenty of things that merely a few decades ago we would've thought would only be possible in the distant future. And I'm also super happy to see us now planning to head back to the moon with the Artemis program. If sci-fi books and films from the 70s had anything to say about that, we should've been way past that milestone achievement by now, but hey, at least we're taking steps again.

An area that had me scratching my head is at what point to include a franchise, and/or an event in that franchise with regards to the validity of the dates found. Films such as Alien have the date clearly visible on screen, whereas other events in franchises are only guesswork on fan forums and wikis, so maybe not the best to use? Some franchises give away no date at all, simply placing it in 'The Far Future'. An obvious example of having to not include something expected, at least at this point, is Star Wars! I have Star Trek, as the dates are very clearly stated and are set from an Earth-centric perspective. But Star Wars? How would I do that? Maybe it's something that I can work out as the site develops and grows. We shall see.

As for this blog section, I wonder whether to keep it limited to only talking about events and timelines, or open it up to talk about sci-fi in general? My thoughts on films, interesting facts I've discovered about the worlds in the franchises or general 'what's going on in sci-fi today'... I'm happy to hear suggestions. It's early days and I'm excited to think where this might go. And of course, even though there's a plethora of sci-fi worlds and stories I've not yet added, there's even more to come as more content is continually created. No matter how far into the 'future' we progress, there'll always be more 'future'.

So, please enjoy clicking around on the counter, reading the franchise hub pages and connected events and check back every so often for updates and maybe new features. Till next time!
